Truthfully, I didn't really have many thoughts before I read The Bloody Chamber and other short stories - this however, intrigued me more and made me want to read it. I am currently reading The Bloody Chamber (and other stories) By Angela Carter for an A2 level short literature project. More literary examples also present themselves such as, in the short story context, Angela Carter's rewritings of fairy tales in The Bloody Chamber and other stories. Then again, to be fair, this book is a good light read. For now, an intellectual review of “The Bloody Chamber and Other Stories” by Angela Carter will need to suffice. The Bloody Chamber is a collection of fairy tale retellings… well, in Carter's eyes, they're not retellings, but, rather, attempts “to extract the latent content from the traditional stories”. First published in France in 1938 and introduced to me by the wonderful Rikki Ducornet, the stories in Marguerite Yourcenar's Oriental Tales do more than just confront the power of desire, they promote it to immense and terrifying dimensions. In the case of 'The Bloody Chamber', the Carter is retelling is Bluebeard's castle. I start to wear black all the time. There is lots of pornography in the story - sexual explicit representation in art, literature or other media. My mood dips each time I read dark books/stories. I have to talk about it's Gothic nature as well as past and present audiences. And she roams the world in furious confusion, seducing and destroying everyone she encounters with vengeful innocence — a unity Yourcenar may have invented — the slave of her own craving to connect with other beings. The Bloody Chamber (and other stories). I thought I would start with The Bloody Chamber.
